United States Nutrition Labels & EU Nutrition Labels: Making the Switch for Food Import

Whether you’re a large CPG company with several food products or a smaller manufacturer of packaged foods, one thing remains constant: your nutrition label must be FDA-compliant if you are interested in importing to the United States. With vast differences between the European nutrition facts panel and a nutrition label in the U.S., it is crucial that all nutrition information is transferred and listed in the proper label format. What’s in a Nutrition Label?

As you can see pictured here, we’ve brought the EU nutrition facts panel alongside the American nutrition label for a comparable view: 

There are several differences between United States Nutrition Labels and European Labels. Can you spot them all?

In this example it’s clear that there are multiple differences in not only the format of the label but the dietary guidelines, serving size, ingredient list and required nutrition information. 

Here are a couple of the highlights:

Serving size: The portions are written in household measurement ( 1 cup, 1 serving, 15 nuts) where as the EU label cites nutrition information per 100g. 

Nutrients: The European Union regulations require that total calories, total fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sugar, salt and protein must be declared while the FDA required 15 nutrients declared on a U.S. nutrition panel for packaged foods. (Calories, calories from fat, fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, sugars, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and iron.)

Ingredient list: As you can observe in our photo comparison, the EU label lists the ingredients with percentage values. FDA regulations for an ingredient list in the United States requires that ingredients are listed in descending order by predominance.
